What is Alzheimer's Disease?
Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that is now affecting more than five million Americans. This disease is the most prevalent and devastating illness of Seniors. Alzheimer's seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities. It is the most common form of dementia among the elderly; it involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language.
One out of every three families is affected by the disease. As Alzheimer's disease progresses, care can become more stressful and complex for the caregiver. No two people experience Alzheimer's disease in the same way. As a result, there is no single approach to care giving. Here at The Village, we adapt to the resident's world, instead of forcing them to adapt to ours.
Auten Center Activities
We have started a "Card Ministry". The residents of Auten Center use donated card fronts, clippings from magazines, etc. to be created into new cards which are sent to people in need of cheering up, a thank you , or a get well soon. Over the past few months, we have sent cards to employees who were ill, Christmas cards to a little boy who wanted to receive nothing but as many cards as possible for Christmas, a homeless shelter, thank you cards to volunteers, and many more.
"Under Construction"
Spring has sprung, and our Auten Center Courtyard is getting some spring cleaning. We are in the process of removing the rock beds and weeds to be replaced with a weed barrier and mulch. Once completed, all the flower pots you see in this photo and more will be planted by the residents and displayed in our weedless, mulch filled flower beds. In addition, our picnic table and benches are being refinished, and some new landscaping is going in as well. Watch for pictures of us playing in the dirt, planting flowers, and our completed courtyard.
